About Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve

The Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve is owned by the National Trust Scotland. It’s one of Scotland's upland jewels, with its magnificent waterfall and wild mountainous landscape. It’s a breathtaking place to visit and enjoy.

The jaw-dropping 60-metre waterfall ranks as the fifth highest cascade in all of Britain. This natural wonder plunges dramatically into a valley. In all honesty it’s insane after it’s been raining. But Grey Mare's Tail is more than just a waterfall; it's a wilderness paradise that sits atop a remote and rugged mountainous landscape. This untamed terrain, coupled with its astounding botanical diversity, makes it a cherished jewel among Scotland's uplands. You can spot peregrine falcons and ring ouzels, and even catch a glimpse of feral goats roaming freely. The last time we visited the Goat was walking around the side of the river and over the bridge. Being feral we didn’t hang around to see if it liked being petted lol.

History of Grey Mare’s Tail

The history of Grey Mare's Tail, both in terms of its geological formation and its cultural significance, is quite fascinating.

Geological History: The main attraction of Grey Mare's Tail is the impressive waterfall, which was formed during the last Ice Age. As the glaciers retreated, they carved out the steep-sided valley that now holds Loch Skeen and the waterfall. The waterfall itself is the result of meltwater from the glaciers, and over time, it has shaped the landscape into the dramatic setting we see today.

Cultural and Historical Significance: Grey Mare's Tail has been a site of interest for centuries. The name "Grey Mare's Tail" is believed to have originated from the appearance of the waterfall, which, from a distance, can resemble the tail of a grey horse streaming down the hillside. In Scottish folklore, such natural features often carried mythological or legendary significance.

Conservation and Protection: It has now been acquired by the National Trust for Scotland, a conservation organisation dedicated to protecting the country's natural and cultural heritage. This acquisition helped ensure the long-term preservation of the site.

Wildlife and Environmental Importance: Beyond its geological and scenic beauty, Grey Mare's Tail is also ecologically significant. The surrounding upland landscape is home to a variety of plant and animal species, including rare upland plants and the vendace, Britain's rarest freshwater fish. The conservation efforts at Grey Mare's Tail have focused on preserving this unique ecosystem.

Grey Mare's Tail Waterfall Walk

Did you know you can walk from Grey Mare's Tail to Loch Skeen? There’s also two ways to see the waterfall.

Short Waterfall Walk

You can park at the car park and walk one of two paths. One will lead you up a short path on the left hand side. It only goes so far and is then blocked off. This is due to the old path becoming unsafe. You can’t get super close but it’s a pretty cool view and isn’t nearly as hard as the other walk.

Grey Mare's Tail To Loch Skeen

On the right hand side of the river is a path that will pass past the waterfall and up to Loch Skeen. This path is a lot more challenging than the other one above and in windy conditions can be a little more sketchy. But we’ve done this walk quite a few times in different weather conditions and still here to tell the tale. It’s a 2.8 mile out and back walk. Once you’ve completed the first section which is quite steep, it flattens out to a stunning walk. You follow the burn through this beautiful landscape of mounds. There’s a tone of smaller waterfalls on the walk to Loch Skeen and most definitely a few spots to cool off on a hotter day. Following the burn you’ll find the opening to Loch Skeen. This is breathtaking, as you walk around the corner the Loch opens up to a huge expanse of water. Now reward yourself with a rest and take in that view!

Best Time to Visit Grey Mare’s Tail

You can visit Grey Mare’s Tail anytime of year. We’ve visited in both Spring, Summer and Autumn. All seasons have their own magical touch in Scotland. Here’s our run down of the seasons, helping you choose when you’ll visit.

Spring

Springtime is a favourite of mine (Trist), winter has passed and the awakening of nature with blooming wildflowers and fresh green foliage arrives. It's an excellent time for birdwatching as many species become active.

Considerations: The weather can still be quite variable, so be prepared for occasional rain and cooler temperatures. To be honest with you, in 2021 we went in May to Scotland and it snowed! Be prepared! :)

Summer

Summer is my most favourite season, but in Scotland it comes with issues, Midges. Summer is also the peak tourist season with the longest daylight hours, making it ideal for hiking and exploring. The waterfall flow and furiosity is dependent on the rainfall. But even if it’s not kicking off like other times of year, it will still be a spectacular sight and the walk to Loch Skeen makes all the more worth it for a little cool off in the burns and Loch.

Considerations: The popularity of the season can lead to larger crowds, so some parts of the reserve and walk may be busier. Plus the car park fills up!

Autumn

Autumn comes and the colours start to change from green to vibrant autumnal colours. Cooler temperatures make walking and enjoying the outside a little comfortable. Plus a lot of the Midges will have started to disappear.

Considerations: While it's less crowded than summer, the weather can start to become cooler and rainier as the season progresses. Again to be honest the weather in Scotland is a mixed bag. You can experience all four seasons in one day.

Winter

It will be less crowded than any other season. It will look beautiful, especially if you can see it in the snowfall.

Considerations: Plan for colder temperatures and shorter daylight hours. The area and path leading to Loch Skeen past the waterfall may be more challenging due to snow and icy conditions.

  • Is the Grey Mare’s Tail dog friendly?

We’ve taken Frank our Frenchie up there and it was fine. We’ve seen lots of people walk their dogs up and down the trail to the Loch. One word of advice would be, the path can get tight in places and with high winds and people coming the other way. It can get interesting. Be sure if you take your dog, you’re comfortable with your surroundings.
