Camping in the New Forest

About Camping in the New Forest

Prices between £12.30 - £25.50 (Facilities reflective of price)

Do we have a treat for you? Have you ever wondered what its like to sleep in the woods surrounded by wild deer, ponies, cows and even the odd pig…then we have you covered.

Well actually
Camping in the New Forest do but we are here to share it with you.

The New Forest is a protected landscape and for that reason you would imagine camping in the forest would be impossible, us too, until we discovered 10 of the best wild campsites scattered across this beautiful place.

Each site is unique in terms of facilities but all have the same commonality, they are wild, stunning, and filled with natural delights of the great outdoors. Walks galore, animal spotting, birds singing and quaint little villages close by, it's what dreams are made of…in our opinion.

All campsites follow the New Forest code which means no open fires, bbqs only when raised off the ground, do not feed the animals or cause any damage to the nature all around you otherwise just enjoy!

Some have facilities whilst others offer the complete wild experience with very limited facilities, something for everyone.

Longbeech, near Fritham (adults only)

  • Open 22nd March until the 1st October
  • Prices from: £12.30 a night for two adults
  • Facilities: Bins, water and Elson point
  • Longbeech website

A back to basics, into the
wild campsite. Surrounded by ancient Beechwood and home to roaming wild ponies, cows and deer this feels more like a peaceful retreat than a campsite. No official camping spots, just set up in whichever little slice of nature you choose and enjoy. There are plenty of walks from this campsite which take you straight into the heart of the New Forest which we recommend doing in the evening as that's when the deer seem most active. A point to note, the phone signal was weak for us both being on EE so worth checking your network coverage if wifi is important to you.

Ocknell, near Fritham (a true nature fix)

  • Open 22nd March until the 1st October
  • Prices from: £13.90 a night for two adults and two children
  • Facilities: Bins, water, Elson point and Toilets
  • Ocknell website

This
campsite is just over the road from Longbeech and is surrounded by woodland but also right next to the heathland where animals roam in their plenty. Due to its history (it was used in WW2 as part of the nearby airfield with space to turn planes) there is a choice between hardstanding and grass spots which makes it easier to access on the wetter days. As with all these campsites you can pitch or park where you choose, our favourite spot is right at the back of the site in the area for campervans/motorhomes only as you can really tuck yourself away.

Roundhill, near Brockenhurst (camp with the ponies)

  • Open 22nd March until the 1st October
  • Prices from: £24.10 a night for two adults and two children
  • Facilities: Bins, water, Elson point, Toilets and Showers
  • Roundhill website

This was the very first of the
campsites we stayed in and you will see why it made us fall in love with these sites. An open greenland surrounded by woods there is space for everyone to enjoy. As of 2024, they added showers which they have dotted all around the site, so no queuing or waiting which is fab. We highly recommend a walk to the pig brewery which is a slow ramble from the site or alternatively, you can take any of the routes out of the site for a walk or cycle through the woods. As with all the sites, there is also a handy book swap in reception and an ice cream shop for the hotter days.

Setthorns, near Sway (open all year round)

  • Prices from: £15.50 a night for two adults and two children
  • Facilities: Bins, water, Elson point and Electric hook-up option.
  • Setthorns website

The only
site that remains open all year. You have a choice between grass and hard standing. Electric is also an option here, only one of two sites which offer this facility. Here you are completely immersed in the woods, camping under the trees, surrounded by wildlife. The birdsong on its own is something to behold. We love this site as you can walk to nearby Sway (which has a fabulous butchers selling local produce) or wander a little further in the opposite direction and you reach Brockenhurst with its award-winning bakery. Both Sway and Brockenhurst can be walked or cycled too along the disused rail track which runs through the bottom of the site.

The other sites we are yet to visit but based on our experience of the top four we would recommend checking out. All are set within natural landscapes with varied facilities to suit everyone.
