No More OVERNIGHT CAMPING Van Life Wales UK

[00:00:06] Trist: Hey welcome back folks. You pick us up in Wales. We are walking round the Penllergaer.

[00:00:12] Kez: I’m not even going to attempt it.

[00:00:13] Trist: Penllergaer Valley Woods, which is just off the M4, I think, interestingly.

[00:00:19] Kez: Yeah it’s sort of sandwiched between the motorways

[00:00:22] Trist: It’s so quiet, let me show you. You got this valley down here. Then there’s some waterfalls back up there. It’s pretty quiet here, but seemingly it’s just off the motorway.

[00:00:30] Kez: Yeah, a little charity-run forest waterfall walk.

A dirt path in the middle of a forest surrounded by trees.

[00:00:37] Trist: £2 for parking, from what it seems the money goes to this charity to keep this going. This is all run by volunteers. So like clearing the paths, woods and trees and whatnot. We’ve been here once before, haven’t we? So we thought we’d show you guys what this place has to offer.

a white van is parked on the side of a dirt road in a field.

[00:00:54] Trist: We woke up at Kidwelly Quay this morning and trundled our way on over here, didn’t we?

[00:00:59] Kez: Yeah what was it about a 45-minute drive?

[00:01:02] Trist: Yeah about 30 mintues.

[00:01:03] Kez: Yeah about a 30-minute drive from Kidwelly. If you’ve been following along on our episodes. Ffrom Oxwich Bay it was about 30 mins to Kidwelly Quay. From Kidwelly Quay about half an hour to these woods. All fairly within the same.

[00:01:16] Trist: Yeah not to far each day.

[00:01:18] Kez: No

[00:01:19] Trist: But yeah this is a lovely woods and we’ve got a nice big clearing here. And err yeah. We’re just going to truck on around here. We’ll show you the sights and delights of Penllergaer Valley woods. If I said that right, sorry.

[00:01:36] Kez: Yeah someone, please phonetically spell it in the comments for us. Actually

[00:01:39] Trist: Well there’s a double L

[00:01:42] Kez: That would be really really helpful actually. When we got to Scotland, Wales, yeah. It’s the pronunciations are tricky and you know it’s important to pronounce things right. So if anyone can phonetically spell it for us in the comments that would be awesome.

[00:01:56] Trist: If we're saying things wrong, do let us know. We're trying our best. Let's go on this little valley, woodland, waterfall walk.

[00:02:06] Trist: So do we go this way or this way? Let's go this way.

[00:02:14] Trist: We set off on our walk. We took the top path of the valley, heading down from one side to the other of the valley floor. There's a network of streams that go off that you can follow It's so peaceful down there.

A sign with a picture of a house and people on it

[00:02:24] Trist: We then found ourselves on the other side walking the high road. Working our way back down to the waterfall.

A waterfall is surrounded by trees and rocks in the middle of a forest.

[00:02:31] Trist: The views here are awesome. I think we spent an hour or two walking around. There are so many paths you can follow zig-zagging your way around.

A river in the middle of a forest surrounded by trees and rocks.

[00:02:42] Trist: Pretty cool in there, just off the footpath and sort of check out those rocks in there. Feel like people have been having campfires in there, like you would do as a little lad.

[00:02:56] Trist: Yeah we've had a lovely, well we're having a lovely walk around here aren't we? So we sort of started one side, came out the car park. Walked the top of the valley. And now we managed to make it around to the other side of the valley. Hopefully, we find a path in and we'll take you down to the waterfalls and water down there. Kez you have a couple of facts to share with us, don't you?

[00:03:18] Kez: This used to be two Estates. But due to a marriage in the 1700s. The fortunate marriage, as it was said. The two estates were combined. Then had too much land. So they turned the lower area into lakes and waterfalls, which we are going to show you. And then gave a lot of it away to farming.

[00:03:39] Trist: But yeah this, what we've just walked along here and you'll have seen. It used to be, this used to be the driveway didn't it. Oh right. So this is the 1.5 mile long carriage drive, that we've just walked.

[00:03:52] Trist: Look check out the view. Not bad is it.

[00:04:03] Kez: Oh it does say waterfalls, that's confusing. It's a good job we came this way.

[00:04:09] Trist: Yeah because this is where we wanted to be.

A waterfall is surrounded by trees and rocks in the middle of a forest.

[00:04:51] Trist: Pretty awesome wasn't it.

[00:04:52] Kez: Yeah it was lovely. Yeah it was really pretty. Be nice in the summer wouldn't it.

[00:04:57] Trist: Well you can't swim in there but.

[00:04:58] Kez: Oh can you not.

[00:04:59] Trist: Nah but it was lovely there wasn't it.

[00:05:01] Kez: Really nice.

[00:05:02] Trist: And to think this is all man-made. That's quite cool.

[00:05:05] Kez: Yeah.

[00:05:06] Kez: And we can see a stalk on the other side of the pond. It never comes up in the distance.

[00:05:12] Trist: Just don't have the right camera for it.

[00:05:24] Kez: In the 1800s, I think 1835 it was, I think he might have been someone important. A man bought this valley. 260 acres and went about a man making a river valley. As it was dubbed. So he started building paths, waterways and everything the charity now maintains and develops.

[00:05:53] Trist: Ah big old tunnel, let's all the water. Let all the water flow through. Just rounding up our walk here. Back off up to the car park. And then well food and then a campsite isn't it.

Pouring coffee into a blue cup

[00:06:09] Trist: Cheeky little Pain au Chocolat. Making a quick coffee. And then tonight we're going to check into Dare Valley Campsite.

Dare Valley Campsite

[00:06:18] Trist: This will be the second campsite we've had to check into. It's just not been as easy on the road as say Scotland. Where's there's a lot of showers and other facilities you can kind of tap into. Wales is a little trickier. So charging, showering and whatnot prevails. So we are going to Dare Valley.

[00:06:42] Trist: Didn't stir, give it a shake. You ready Frank?

A wooden gate with the words dare valley country park written on it.

[00:07:23] Trist: As we were at a campsite time for a campfire and a cheeky beer. We didn't have a chance to explore the massive park as we had work to crack on with. Next time we'll take you out for an exploration.

[00:07:51] Trist: The next day we headed to Pont Ar Daf. Hope I said that properly. Where you can park and head up Pen Y Fan. We took this little loop walk through the woods. This was the last day of our trip, so we took it easy. And thought twice about the big walk. And headed back to the van for the evening before we headed home.

A red van is parked on the side of the road.

[00:09:03] Trist: Waking up, we packed up and headed for the border and back to England. That's it for this trip. We hope you enjoyed our travel series to Wales.
