How to get to Knockan Crag Nature Reserve
By Car:
When leaving Ullapool you follow the A835 north for 13 miles. IV27 4HH is the nearest postcode which would take you 2.7 miles North of the carpark. The carpark is hardstanding with space for approximately 20 vehicles. In the three times we have visited we have never seen more than 5 vehicles in the car park at any one time.
By Bus:
You can get a Bus from Ullapool but speak to the driver as your board, Knockan Crag Nature Reserve is a stop by request.

It is completely free to visit, hike and park at Knockan Crag Nature Reserve.
Parking at Knockan Crag
There is a car park available at Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve for visitors to use. The car park is located near the visitor centre and there is a £10 donation that can be made to Nature Scotland for parking. However, the car park can get busy during peak season and it's recommended to arrive early to secure a spot. Additionally, if you're planning to visit the site during the winter months, it's advisable to check road conditions and weather forecasts beforehand, as the area can be affected by snow and ice.
Overnight Parking At Knockan Crag
If you are looking for overnight parking on the nc500 or where can i park my motorhome on nc500, then we have you covered. You can stay in the car park for a £10 donation to Nature Scotland. There is also a free drinking water tap.

There are toilets located in the Knockan Crag car park and are free to use. Open 24/7.
The Knockan Crag Nature Trail
What is the Knockan Crag Nature Trail
It’s a geological delight. A purpose built trail which takes you along the Knockan Crag rockside until eventually winding up the steep rock face to the top. Breathtaking views.
Is the trail accessible for all?
There is an early diversion off the Knockan Crag Thrust trail which leads you back to the carpark along the quarry path.
The thrust trail continues along to Moines Thrust where you can choose to turn back on yourself or if more able take the steep climb to the Crag Top Trail which delivers breathtaking views of Coigach and Assynt.
Where does the Knockan Crag Trail Start?
The start point for the hike is the carpark.
Walking to and through the Visitor Centre this laid path offers diversions further along which create three walks as referenced above.
Sights to see along the Nature Trail
The opensided visitor centre, the Rock Room, is open 24 hours and displays information and art interpretation based on and about the surrounding area.
The geology of this amazing hike is highlighted along the path with sculptures and poetry at every turning point.
With far-reaching views at every point on this trail, it’s a real feast for the eyes.



How long is Knockan Crag Walk?
The duration of the walk at Knockan Crag can vary depending on the route taken and the pace of the walker. The main trail at Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve is approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) long and it can take around 30 minutes to complete the loop at a leisurely pace with stops to admire the viewpoints and rock formations.
However, if you decide to explore the reserve further by taking some of the other trails, the walk can take up to 1 hour or more. It's important to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather conditions and to bring water and snacks with you.
Why is the Geology at Knockan Crag Famous?
Knockan Crag is renowned worldwide due to the Moine Thrust first identified in the 1860s. The Moine Thrust is a geological fault affecting the rocks, where the older rocks have been pushed towards, up and over younger rocks. Identifying this feature was an important advance in understanding geological sequences; it has had an impact around the world.
What is Moines Thrust?
The Moine Thrust Belt or Moine is a linear tectonic feature in the Scottish Highlands.
The thrust belt consists of a series of thrust faults that branch off the Moine Thrust. Viewable at approximately half way of the full Knockan Crag Hike.
It’s An ecological marvel which changed understanding of rock formation the world over.
