During our visit, we made a morning stop at Rogie Falls before proceeding to Whaligoe Steps and then camping at John O'Groats. This helped break up our North Coast 500 journey and added variety to our itinerary.

Why Do Salmon Leap Upstream?

Salmon exhibit the behavior of swimming and leaping upstream primarily as part of their reproductive cycle, a crucial aspect for ensuring the survival of their offspring.

Salmon are classified as anadromous, signifying that they are born in freshwater, embark on a migration to the saltwater ocean for the majority of their adult lives, and eventually return to freshwater environments for the purpose of reproduction.

This arduous journey serves a dual role, functioning both as a migration process and as a mechanism to secure the survival of young salmon until they hatch and mature into adults.

As young salmon hatch in their native stream, they develop a strong olfactory memory of the stream's unique scent. Additionally, during their downstream migration to the ocean, they have the ability to recall specific scents encountered along the way.

Consequently, after spending several years away, when these salmon return as adults, they rely on their olfactory memory to detect the familiar scents that guide them back to their home stream.
